An inflammation of the eye's outer membrane, which causes redness, swelling, itching and watering. In allergic conjunctivitis, both eyes are usually affected. Viral or bacterial conjunctivitis can affect a single eye or both eyes. There are several medications available to relieve the symptoms. Most of the medications are topical, such as eye drops or ointments.
