Dr. Parag Parekh, MD, MPA, was highly recruited by Minnesota Eye Consultants from the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, where he completed his training in ophthalmology. His specialties are cornea, cataract, glaucoma, and LASIK/refractive surgery.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Parekh earned his college degree (Bachelor of Arts with Honors, Biology Major) from Johns Hopkins University. He went to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania, and was then awarded a scholarship (Kennedy Fellowship) to attend graduate school at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he earned a Master’s of Public Administration (MPA) degree in U.S. Health Policy, Economics and Management.
Dr. Parekh completed his ophthalmology training at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute, where he was the first resident to perform “bladeless” LASIK, using the Intralase laser. He is also highly active in research. At Penn, he performed important research on the topic of myopia development (near sightedness) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and was supported by a short-term research grant from the NIH (National Institute of Child Health & Human Development).
At Johns Hopkins, he was awarded the A. E. Maumenee Research Grant Award, the W. Richard Green Research Grant Award and the Oliver D. Schein Research Grant Award. He has authored numerous textbook chapters and research articles in several prestigious peer-reviewed journals, such as the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, the Journal of Glaucoma, and Ophthalmology. Dr. Parekh also reviews manuscripts for Ophthalmology and the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery. As a senior resident, Dr. Parekh won 3rd place in the highly esteemed Johns Hopkins Mitchell Prize Research Competition.
Dr. Parekh enjoys writing in his free time, and is the founder and co-author of a monthly column (in Ophthalmology Times) dedicated to exploring issues related to ophthalmology training. He is also currently working on a Harvard Business School Case Study on the Aravind Eye Hospital, the world’s largest eye hospital.
Dr. Parekh is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, and the American Medical Association. For his work in the area of health policy, the American Medical Association Foundation awarded Dr. Parekh its 2006 Leadership Award.
Dr. Parekh lives in St. Louis Park with his wife and newborn son, and will be practicing in our Minneapolis location.
