Eyesight is a sense provided by the visual system's complex network of tissues and electronic signals, which convert light into meaningful images. As such, the ability to see affects our ability to interface with the world around us and touches every aspect of daily life.
Millions of Americans suffer with visual impairment, which is among the top ten most common disabilities in the United States. Two-thirds of visually impaired adults are over age 65. The number of Americans over the age of 65 will double from 34 to 68 million between 2000 and 2030.
